Poznámka: Note: | 三式指揮連絡機 - armádní spojovací letoun Typ 3 Spojenecké kódové jméno: Stella. Popis a nasazení v dalším příspěvku. | 三式指揮連絡機 - Army Type 3 Command Liaison Plane The Allied code-name was: 'Stella' The Kokusai Ki-76 are relatively similar to the German aircraft to the Fieseler Fi 156 Storch; however, the aircraft was not simply a copy of the German machine since its design began ten months before the Japanese received a example of the Fi 156. In 1940 the apparent success obtained by the Germans with their Fi 156s prompted the Japanese Army to instruct Nippon Kokusai Koku Kogyo to build a similar machine for artillery spotting and liaison duties. Designated Ki-76 the aircraft owed its existence to a team led by Kozo Masuhara who patterned its design around that of the German aircraft. The external appearance of both aeroplanes was very much alike, but whereas the Storch was powered by an Argus As 10c eight-cylinder inverted-vee air-cooled engine the Ki-76 was powered by a Hitachi Ha-42 nine-cylinder air-cooled radial engine. Furthermore Masuhara decided to use Fowler flaps instead of the slotted flaps used on the Fieseler Storch. These Fowler flaps were synchronised with the variable-incidence horizontal tail surfaces and offered. a higher lift coefficient. On the Storch the glazed area is wider than the fuselage, giving the crew an excellent view directly down. On the Ki-76 the glazed area is the same width as the fuselage. Late in 1943 the Ki-76 was modified for service aboard the Japanese Army aircraft carrier Akitsu Maru as an anti-submarine patrol aircraft. For this duty the aircraft was fitted with a deck arrester hook and carried two 132 lbs depth-charges. Normally seven Ki-76s were embarked aboard the Akitsu Maru but the aircraft was not too successful on this type of operation. |
